Job Details
Nusrat Ghani is recruiting an experienced Communications Manager to be based in the constituency, with a focus on creating written content for newsletters, the website and press releases, as well as coordinating a busy constituency events diary.
The successful applicant will be a clear, effective communicator, who is motivated and adept at managing their own workload. They will join a small, dedicated team based in Sussex Weald, supporting the MP to deliver for constituents & to grow the MP’s profile and reputation locally through traditional media and by maintaining local relationships through a busy constituency diary.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning and delivery of the MP’s constituency diary, managing all events, meetings and visits locally
- Create high-quality written content for the MP’s press releases, regular digital newsletters, parish magazine updates and website
- Produce engaging digital and written content around visits and wider constituency work, including press releases, high-quality digital content for social media, and other follow-up comms from engagements
- Liaise with journalists and media outlets proactively, managing media adverts and meeting deadlines as appropriate
- Prepare itineraries and high-quality briefings for the MP ahead of visits; attend engagements, keeping track of time and priorities, capturing notes and gathering comms content
- Manage the MP’s website including surveys, data management using Mailchimp, and reporting on patterns and trends for strategic growth
- Undertake regular media monitoring, record keeping and administrative tasks related to communications activity
- Critically analyse patterns of enquiries and articulate findings in reports and communications with the MP and other staff members
- Respond to local invites and maintain stakeholder relationships with organisations and individuals
- Progress routine casework arising from local meetings and visits
- Horizon scan for local engagement and campaign opportunities, identifying and developing creative communications ideas to extend reach and secure coverage across both digital and traditional media
- Work closely with the Digital Communications Officer, particularly on the media & comms grid, campaign-associated comms, and website content
- The role will occasionally require working outside of normal hours, including evenings and weekends. This will be communicated well in advance and compensated via TOIL
The Successful Candidate Will Have
- Knowledge of the Sussex Weald constituency and local issues is highly advantageous
- Professional experience creating high-quality written content for an MP or in a similar public affairs, marketing or journalism role
- Experience of working in an MP’s office (strongly desirable)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a high level of IT competency (familiarity with Mailchimp and Bluetree websites is an advantage)
- Excellent grammar and a keen attention to detail
- The ability to match written tone and maintain high-quality communications across a range of contexts
- The ability to take high-quality photos
- The ability to work well independently & proactively as part of a small team; keeping track of and progressing tasks and managing own workload is crucial, as is communicating with the team
Security Vetting
Upon appointment, you will be required to apply for security clearance through the Security Vetting and Pass Office. Applicants must have been resident in the United Kingdom for a minimum of three out of the last five years. Applications from candidates who do not meet this requirement cannot be considered, in accordance with Parliament’s security and vetting policy.
