Alison Hume MP is looking for a highly motivated Senior Parliamentary Assistant to join her Parliamentary team. The role will focus on supporting Alison’s work and interests in Parliament across a wide range of policy areas, as part of the team supporting the constituents of Scarborough and Whitby.

This role is predominantly Westminster based with some travel to the constituency also required (travel costs will be reimbursed).

Applicants should have a detailed understanding of the daily workings and processes of Parliament and a good understanding of supporting a busy and dynamic MP. Alison is looking for a staff member who is proactive and a strong team player.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

 

  • Ensure the Member is accurately informed on key issues, and ensure she is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House
  • Working with the constituency team to ensure projects dovetail between Parliament and the constituency
  • Horizon scanning to identify opportunities to pursue topics of local importance and to progress priority campaigns
  • Research local, regional, national or international issues to support the MP's work
  • To produce and present high quality written reports, briefing notes, and professional advice
  • Maintaining routine policy and campaign casework and undertaking complex policy casework as required
  • Drafting Parliamentary Questions, speeches and articles.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Parliamentary experience essential and a good knowledge of the resources available to MPs
  • Excellent political judgement and the ability to think and plan strategically.
  • A positive attitude, self-motivating, using initiative and creativity in dealing with the variety of tasks and multiple priorities that Westminster presents daily.
  • Experience performing a wide range of tasks whilst managing a heavy and fast paced workload
  • Outstanding written and verbal skills, with keen attention to detail
  • Professionalism, diplomacy, and political awareness are essential
  • Some out of hours working will be required.
  • Identify with the aims and objectives of the Labour Party.
