Salary: £23,810 – £37,846 (starting salary dependent on experience)
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full-time (flexible working considered on any days except Friday; weekend working required)
About the role
Chi Onwurah MP is seeking a committed and compassionate Caseworker to support constituents across Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West.
Working alongside the Senior Caseworker and Parliamentary Assistant, you will manage a varied and often sensitive caseload, acting as a first point of contact for constituents and helping them navigate complex issues. Previous casework experience is not essential – training, guidance and support will be provided.
The role involves regular engagement in the constituency, including advice surgeries and visits, and evening or weekend work. A full driving licence and use of a car is essential, as Fridays will be spent attending meetings and visits with the MP.
Key responsibilities
- Managing constituent casework sensitively and efficiently via email, telephone, letter and face-to-face contact
- Logging and progressing cases promptly, keeping constituents informed throughout
- Liaising with government departments, local authorities and external agencies
- Drafting clear and accurate correspondence on behalf of constituents
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant policy, legislation and GDPR requirements
- Supporting advice surgeries, constituency visits and meetings
- Identifying emerging local issues and feeding these back to the MP
- Producing basic casework reports and summaries
- Providing occasional support to colleagues and the wider office as required
About you
You will be able to demonstrate:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A calm, empathetic and professional approach when dealing with sensitive issues
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
- Confidence working independently as well as as part of a small team
- Good IT skills, including the ability to learn casework management systems
- An understanding of issues affecting communities in Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West
- A full UK driving licence and access to a car are required.
